BIRMINGHAM : A fluent century by skipper Virat Kohli guided India to 274 in reply to England’s first innings 287, a deficit of 13 runs, on the second day of the first Test at Edgbaston on Thursday.
The visitors were in danger of conceding a first-innings lead of more than a hundred runs at 182 for eight. But India captain Virat Kohli made England pay for Dawid Malan dropping him in the slips on 21 and 51 with a superb 149 -- his first Test century on English soil.
India’s final two wickets added 82 runs before Kohli was last man out, caught at backward point by Stuart Broad off the bowling of leg-spinner Adil Rashid. Sam Curran, a 20-year-old left-arm swing bowler led England’s attack with a Test-best four wickets for 74 runs in 17 overs in just his second match at this level.
Resuming at 76 for three after lunch, the visitors quickly found themselves on the back foot as all rounder Ben Stokes picked up two wickets to leave India reeling at 100-5 and trailing England’s first innings total by 127 runs.
James Anderson was the most economical of the English bowlers with 27 runs off 15 overs though he was unlucky not to bag any wickets after an edge off Kohli was dropped when he on 21.
The visitors suffered some early blows in their reply to England’s modest first innings total of 287.
After the Indian openers chalked up a half century partnership, the visitors were rocked by three swift strikes by the 20-year-old Curran who is playing in his only second test.
