All five are workers from Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu. Sood said he suspects one of the detainees is a minor. He said he was 17 years old. Police are trying to confirm this.
The country was shocked by the incident on Tuesday evening. The torture was similar to the Nirbhaya case which shooked the nation in 2012.
As this is a sensitive case, we can only move forward by gathering technical and scientific evidence, said Praveen Sood.
A 22-year-old MBA student from Maharashtra studying at Mysore University and her friend were attacked in Chamundi Hills area on Tuesday evening.
The drunken group was following the young woman and her friend as they were riding their bike to the nearby forest at around 7.30 pm. This is where the brutal attack took place.
After beating the young man on the head, the young woman was taken away, brutally tortured and the footage was recorded on a phone. When he regained consciousness, the gang demanded Rs 3 lakh. They also threatened to release the footage if not the ransome amount given.
Finally, the young man called his father and he arrived in a car and rushed the two to the hospital.
Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra said that the police have not been able to record the woman's statement yet. She is not yet free from the impact of the incident. The incident has sparked strong protests across the country.
Gyanendra's remark that the young woman and her friend should not have gone there had caused a great deal of controversy. He was speaking after a visit to the scene.
Following the incident, the University of Mysore issued an order prohibiting female students from leaving the campus after 6.30 pm. Girls are not allowed to enter the Kukkarahalli lake area after 6.30 pm.
The university said both orders were issued on the verbal instructions of the police department.
