THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a historic decision, the State Child Rights Commission has ordered that there should be no boys and girls schools in Kerala henceforth and all schools should be made mixed.
The decision should be implemented from the next academic year. The order also says that preparations for this should be carried out immediately.
Boys and girls high schools in the state should be discontinued. All schools should implement mixed and co-education from the next academic year.
Physical conditions in schools including toilets should be improved. The commission order also said that the education department should take steps to sensitize parents about the need for co-education.
The commission ordered the establishment of mixed schools on a petition filed by Isaac Paul a native is Kollam Achal. By running separate schools for boys and girls, gender justice is denied, says Isaac Paul in his petition.
There are 280 girls schools and 164 boys schools in Kerala. All these will have to be converted into co-educational schools.
The commission also suggested that the principal secretary of the public education department, the director of public education, and the SCERT director should respond to the order by taking action.
At the same time, murmurs have been raised in some quarters against the order. There are indications that some may approach the court. If so, the implementation of this historic decision may be delayed.
