MOSCOW: The Polish Fencing Federation (PFF) has refused to host the FIE (the International Fencing Federation) World Cup stage this month because the international organization allowed athletes from Russia to compete in the event under a neutral status, the PZS press office said in a statement on Wednesday.
Two weeks ago, the Polish Fencing Federation (PFF) announced that it might scrap plans to hold the FIE World Cup stage in Poznan in April if Russian athletes are allowed to participate in the event under a neutral status.
The 2023 Coupe du Monde, which is one of the FIE’s World Cup stages for women’s foil fencing, is scheduled to be hosted by the Polish city of Poznan between April 21 and 23.
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced its decision on March 10 to allow athletes representing Russia and Belarus to participate in FIE-authorized international events under a neutral status. On March 14, the Polish consulate general in Moscow stated that Russian fencers were currently ineligible to obtain Polish entry visas.
The German Fencing Federation announced on March 16 that it would bow out of organizing an FIE World Cup event because the global fencing federation allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete internationally under a neutral status.
The International Olympic Committee recommended on March 28 that international federations allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under a neutral status, while they would not be able to take part in team events. In addition, athletes should not be supporters of the special military operation or be affiliated with the armed forces or national security agencies.
Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) President Stanislav Pozdnyakov called these recommendations absolutely unacceptable as they would lead to a split in Russian sports.
