MOSCOW: The Public Communication Network Monitoring and Management Center of the Russian IT watchdog agency Roskomnadzor detected almost 500 cyberattacks that required "taking countermeasures" during the presidential elections, the agency press office told TASS.
"During the past elections, a total of 497 DDoS attacks that required countermeasures from the Center were made against the national informational and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure," the agency said.
According to Roskomnadzor, the Center specialists ensured protection of 920 important Russian informational resources during the elections. The attacks were aimed mainly at the Central Election Commission and the Moscow online voting platform websites.
"In addition, during the same period, a total of 5 phishing websites that imitated the election-related websites," the agency added.
The Russian presidential elections took place between March 15 and 17. This was the first time that a presidential election lasted for three days and involved online voting, which was available in approximately one third of the regions.
