MOSCOW: The first batch of import-substituted implants made of bioresorbable magnesium (MgSorb) based on an alloy developed by specialists of Togliatti State University (TSU) has arrived at Russian medical institutions, the university's press service said.
According to the official document, a trial batch of Russia's first bioresorbable rods was sent to hospitals in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Novosibirsk. "We have already received positive feedback from doctors who have successfully performed surgeries on their patients," the report quotes Maksim Medvedev, commercial director of LLC Medical Trading, a traumatologist and orthopedist, as saying.
About the development
MgSorb bioresorbable implant is a unique domestic product made of an alloy that has the ability to dissolve and be utilized by the body without harming health. In addition to its high biocompatibility, it has an osteoconductive effect (promoting bone formation) and tends to suppress the spread of infection, which has been confirmed by experimental studies. "Magnesium implants are a new word in traumatology and orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery and a whole range of medical fields. This technology is new not only for our country, but also for the whole world. I am proud that Russian scientists and manufacturers are among the leaders in this field. <...> Magnesium implants are superior to the imported analogs that were and are still on our market," the press release quotes the head of the Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics of the N.N. Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital Leonid Brizhan as saying.
The production is organized in the Innovation and Technology Park of Togliatti State University (TSU) together with Medical Trading Company LLC (MTK) within the framework of the federal project to create Advanced Engineering Schools (AES) in Russia.
The development branched from the project to create a laboratory under the Russian government decree No. 220 under the leadership of leading scientist Alexey Vinogradov, TSU Rector Mikhail Krishtal said. "In order to develop bioresorbable implants based on the obtained alloy, TSU created a consortium called 'New Technologies for Magnesium Alloys', which included LLC Solikamsk Experimental Metallurgical Plant and the Institute for Metals Superplasticity Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. With the former we worked out the alloy formulation, and with the latter - the technology of all-round isothermal forging to obtain an ultra-fine grained alloy structure," he said.
According to Dmitry Merson, the Director of the Research and Development Institute of Advanced Technologies at Togliatti State University, by the end of November 2024 TSU will begin to produce not only spokes, but also screws made of bioresorbable magnesium alloy from calibrated bars of its own production. "Thus, a full cycle plant for the production of certified medical devices as well as of semi-finished products made from bioresorbable magnesium alloy will begin to operate on the basis of the University Innovation and Technology Park," stated in the message.
