SEOUL: The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Korea (ROK) has advised Moscow, which it accuses of holding illegal military cooperation with North Korea, against discussing bilateral relations with Seoul amid the latest developments in the southern Korean Peninsula, Yonhap reported.
"It is inappropriate for the envoy [of a foreign nation] in our country to make public remarks about the bilateral relations in reference to the host country’s political situation," the ministry said.
"If Russia wants to restore the South Korea-Russia relations, it must first end its illegal military cooperation with North Korea, which threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," the ministry added, according to Yonhap. Moscow has repeatedly denied allegations of maintaining illegal military cooperation with Pyongyang previously. In June, Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty.
On Saturday, Russian Ambassador to Seoul Georgy Zinovyev said that as long as the ROK has not crossed the "red line" of sending weapons to Ukraine the potential for restoring bilateral ties remain. "Hopefully, the dramatic events taking place in the political life of the Republic of Korea will not eventually hinder this possibility," the Russian diplomat said.
On December 14, the South Korean parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol. The Constitutional Court must now decide whether to remove the incumbent leader from office.
