VATICAN: Pope Francis, who was recently hospitalized in critical condition with double pneumonia, slept well last night, the Holy See’s press service said.
"The Pope rested well all night," the statement reads.
On Monday, a slight improvement was reported in the 88-year-old pontiff’s condition after he had suffered a serious respiratory attack on February 22.
A prayer service for Pope Francis’s recovery took place in St. Peter’s Square on Monday night, led by the Vatican’s second-highest official after the pontiff, Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Cardinals, members of the Curia, Vatican personnel, priests from Roman parishes, and believers gathered in front of the cathedral. There were also many nuns and clergy, as well as foreigners. Even some tourists stopped by to pray, while journalists from various countries were covering the event live.
Vatican circles are talking about some relief in Pope Francis’s condition and a growing sense of hope. On Monday, the pontiff’s doctors said that the kidney issue that had emerged after the attack was not causing concern and the patient’s lab results had improved.
Moreover, the Vatican press service noted that he "returned to work." In particular, the Pope resumed his daily phone calls to the Catholic parish in Gaza.
Pope Francis continues to receive oxygen, but he is eating on his own, Vatican sources specified.
Doctors remain watchful, making cautious forecasts. The crisis is not over yet, and the clinical picture remains complicated, given that the patient is suffering from a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection at an advanced age.
