MOSCOW: Russia expects that its relations with Syria will further develop in the future and will be grounded in equality and mutual benefit, Russian president’s special representative for the Middle East and African countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Izvestia.
"Syria has always been Russia's important partner in the Arab world and on the international stage. Relations between our countries have historically been friendly, rooted in the principles of mutual respect and regard for each other's interests. I trust that they will continue to develop on an equal and mutually advantageous basis," he said. "Today, Syria is experiencing difficult times. We hope that its people will successfully overcome the numerous challenges stemming from the protracted crisis in the country. On our part, we are ready to continue to provide Syrians with the required assistance."
"The events that led to the change of power in Syria in December 2024 do not change our fundamental positions," the special envoy emphasized. "We have been unwavering in our support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and continue to maintain it. We are guided by the idea that it is up to Syrians themselves to determine the future of the country via a broad nationwide dialogue, which takes into account the legitimate interests of all political forces and ethno-confessional groups.".
