BRUSSELS: Europe should enter an arms race with Russia, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said ahead of an EU summit in Brussels.
"Europe should rise to the challenge of an arms race, and win it," he said, according to a broadcast on the social media accounts of the Polish premier’s office.
According to Tusk, initiatives aimed at increasing funding for the defense industry mark the first step along this path.
On March 4, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she had presented an 800 billion euro rearmament plan to EU leaders. The initiative suggests that European Union countries borrow up to 150 billion euros for defense. The European Commission will borrow from capital markets to lend to member states for joint procurement of weapons in Europe. The money will be spent on the production of air defense systems within the European Union, as well as on weapons for Ukraine. In addition, the European Commission has also urged EU members to increase defense spending by 1.5% in order to collect 650 billion euros for weapons production.
