MOSCOW:  Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the congress of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, expressed bewilderment why the G7 is called the "big" seven, although it is hardly "visible on the map."

"Why is it big? It is unclear. What is big there? Wherever you look, it is hardly visible on the map," he said.

The GDP growth in the G7 countries for 2024 was just 1.9%, while the BRICS countries saw a growth rate of 4.9%. In Russia, the growth was 4.1% for two consecutive years, as emphasized by Putin.

Russia was a member of the G8 (which existed in the G7 format, comprising the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, the US, France, and Japan since 1976) from 1997 until its suspension.
