BRATISLAVA:  Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has declared that his country may veto the European Union's adoption of new sanctions against Russia, according to the TASR news agency.

"We cannot insist on adopting sanctions at any cost. There may come a moment when we will say we do not agree because we believe they are ineffective to the current efforts for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. We are prepared to veto any new sanctions, if we determine they could hinder the peace settlement process," Fico remarked.

The Slovak prime minister reportedly made this statement before departing for Brussels, where he will attend a European Council meeting.

Fico indicated that all EU sanctions against Russia could potentially be lifted in the coming weeks or months. The sanctions list currently includes over 2,400 individuals and legal entities. The prime minister discussed Slovakia's stance on these measures with members of the committee on European affairs of Slovakia’s National Council (parliament).
