MOSCOW: US President Donald Trump is acting prematurely when he talks about the elimination of the United States, Russia’s, and China’s nuclear arsenals as this cannot be done at the moment, Russian Permanent Representative to the Vienna-based international organizations Mikhail Ulyanov said.
"As far as I understand based on Trump’s speech, he spoke about the complete elimination of nuclear arsenals. I am afraid he is getting ahead of things. This is out of the question now. However, some cuts or arms control measures are quite understandable," he said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 television channel, commenting on Trump’s proposal on the denuclearization of the United States, Russia, and China
Following his inauguration on January 20, 2025, Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to negotiate with Russia and China on reducing nuclear stockpiles in the foreseeable future but has not advanced any concrete initiatives. Meanwhile, Moscow and Washington need to discuss whether they are ready to forge a deal to replace the New START treaty on the reduction of strategic offensive arms, which expires in 2026.
