MOSCOW: Vladimir Zelensky refused to apologize for the heated exchange with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
Asked by the Fox News anchor in an interview whether he thinks that he owes an apology to Trump, Zelensky said: "I respect the president, I respect American people. I think that we have to be very open and very honest. And I’m not sure that we did something bad."
Zelensky is confident that the relationship with the US leader can be salvaged, he added. "Yes, of course, because it's relations more than two presidents. It's the historical relations, strong relations between our people," he said when asked a respective question.
Earlier on Friday, Zelensky met with Trump at the White House. Their televised exchange suddenly unraveled into a shouting match, with Trump scolding Zelensky for being disrespectful to the US, and Vice President JD Vance saying that Zelensky had never thanked the country for all the support provided to Kiev. A news conference scheduled to follow the meeting was canceled, and the Ukrainian delegation left the White House earlier than planned. Bilateral talks and the scheduled signing of the deal on Ukrainian mineral resources were thwarted.
