Kolkata: Legendary Indian footballer cum cricketer Chuni Goswami has passed away today. He was 82 years old.
He was pronounced dead from the hospital around 5 pm this evening due to heart attack. He had been suffering from diabetes and neurological problems for some time. Wife: Basanti. Son : Sudipto.
He captained of the 1962 Asian Games gold medal team. From 1956 to 1964, Goswami played 50 matches for India. In Football, He played for Mohan Baghan club.
During college, he captained of the University of Calcutta in football and cricket teams for the same year.
Goswami, who began his international career in 1957, was one of the most valuable players on the national team. However, he left international football in 1964 at the age of 27.
Goswami was a successful cricketer too. In 1966, he and Subroto Guha plotted the historic innings defeat of Gary Sobers’ West Indies by the combined Central and East Zone team under Hanumant Singh in Indore. Goswami took eight wickets in that fixture.
Between 1962 and 1973, he represented Bengal in 46 first-class cricket matches. He captained the Bengal Ranji Trophy during the 1971-72 season.
