Chennai: Prominent South Indian actress Chitra died at her residence in Chennai following a heart attack. She was 56 years old.

She is best known for her Malayalam films such as Attakkalasam, Amaram, Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, Devasuram, Panchagni, Nadodi, Advaitam, Ammayane Satyam, Ekalavyan, Malayogam and Aaram Thampuran. Apart from Malayalam, she has acted in over 100 films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

She was born on February 25, 1965 in Kochi. She is the daughter of Rajajopal and Devi. Husband Vijayaraghavan and Shruti is  daughter. She made her film debut as a child in the 1975 Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal.

Her performance in the 1983 Mohanlal-Prem Nazeer film Attakkalasam made the film stand out. She has not acted in a movie since 2001. She is currently acting in Tamil Tele serials.

The funeral will be held at 4 pm this evening in Saligram, Chennai, family members said.
