PRAGUE: Czech President Milos Zeman on Sunday appointed Petr Fiala, the leader of the Together coalition that won last month's parliamentary election, as the new prime minister.
Zeman, who was discharged from hospital on Saturday after a positive COVID-19 test, appointed Fiala at a socially-distanced ceremony at his residence in Lany, west of capital Prague, according to the president's office.
The Together coalition, formed by three parties -- Civic Democratic Party, the Christian Democrats and TOP 09 -- came first in the October election, narrowly beating the ANO party led by outgoing Prime Minister Andrej Babis.
The coalition later agreed to form a majority government with the alliance of Pirates party and Mayors and Independents (STAN), securing 108 seats in the 200-member lower house of the Czech parliament.
According to the Czech News Agency, Fiala wants his cabinet to assume power in mid-December at the latest.
