ANKARA: As many as 40,642 people have been killed in the earthquakes that struck Turkey on February 6, Yunus Sezer, head of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, said at a briefing on Saturday.
"To date, the death toll is 40,642. As many as 108,068 people have been injured. More than 430,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster zone to other areas," he said.
Sezer pointed out that the search and rescue operations were continuing in some disaster-hit regions.
"However, the search and rescue operations will be mostly over by tomorrow night (February 19). Now the most intense work is underway in Hatay, where 13,000 rescuers are working on the rubble," he specified.
Two powerful 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes rocked Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province, located in the country’s southeast, within nine hours on February 6. The quakes have caused extensive destruction and suffering in ten Turkish provinces. The tremors, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, were also felt in neighboring countries, of which Syria was the worst affected.
