MOSCOW: The Russian side paid close attention to what Argentina's newly elected president Javier Milei said during his election campaign, and now will wait to see if he follows through on his words, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
"We have paid attention to the many statements made by Mr. Milei during the election campaign, but mainly we will be guided and judge by what he says after the inauguration," the Kremlin spokesman said.
Peskov pointed out: "In particular, we are waiting for clarifications on many issues that will affect our bilateral relations."
According to the spokesman, Russia respects the choice of the country’s people. He noted that Argentina is a very important country in South America and Russia has "quite good relations" with it. "We are in favor of further developing our bilateral relations," Peskov emphasized.
Election results
On November 19, the second round of presidential elections took place in Argentina. Javier Milei, who heads the Libertarian Party, part of the right-wing ‘the Freedom Advances’ alliance, defeated Economy Minister Sergio Massa. The politician advocates minimal state interference, wants to get rid of the Central Bank and proposes replacing the national currency with the dollar.
He repeatedly stated that he has no intention of developing relations with Brazil, China and Russia due to his disagreement with the policies of these states, but will not prevent businesses from dealing with them; he considers Israel and the US Argentina’s top allies. According to Milei’s Foreign Policy Advisor Diana Mondino, the Freedom Advances alliance currently sees no point in Argentina taking part in BRICS, to which the country was admitted after the association’s August summit.
