NEW YORK: Former US President Donald Trump's possible win at the 2024 United States presidential election may result in the country's withdrawal from NATO, The New York Times reported.
According to the US daily, numerous diplomats as well as governments of NATO member states voiced alarm previously that "Trump’s return could mean not just the abandonment of Ukraine, but a broader American retreat from the continent and a gutting of the Atlantic alliance."
"There is great fear in Europe that a second Trump presidency would result in an actual pullout of the United States from NATO," the daily quoted James Stavridis, a retired four-star Navy admiral who was NATO’s supreme allied commander between 2009 and 2013, as saying. "That would be an enormous strategic and historic failure on the part of our nation."
The New York Times pointed out that the majority of European countries are uncertain about the choice of a possible path in case of Trump’s win at the US presidential election.
