TOKYO: Osamu Suzuki, who headed the Japanese automobile company Suzuki for more than 40 years, has died at the age of 94 from lymphoma, the corporation announced.
Osamu Suzuki joined the company in 1958, when he married the daughter of one of its founders and took her last name. Twenty years later, he became the president of the company and focused on the production of small, low-cost vehicles in Japan, as well as on developing markets of India and Southeast Asia, as well as in Hungary.
By focusing on production of small, low-cost vehicles, the company occupied a dominant position in this niche for a long time. Under the leadership of Osamu Suzuki, Suzuki sales increased tenfold. Although Suzuki is a smaller player in Japan than larger corporations, it has a market share of over 40% in India as of 2023. Osamu Suzuki stepped down as president of the company in 2015 at the age of 85, handing over the post to his son, Toshihiro Suzuki.
