MOSCOW: The Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) passenger plane that crashed near the airport in Aktau, Kazakhstan in December showed damage caused by extraneous factors, but the investigation by the Kazakh authorities proved inconclusive, while Russia has still not had a chance to examine the key evidence, Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) said.
"A preliminary report has confirmed: the aircraft sustained damage from external impact. That said, the report indicates that the Kazakh side was not able to identify the objects onboard the aircraft, while the Russian Federation has not had the opportunity to examine them because it has not received these objects for an expert evaluation," the agency said in a statement.
Earlier, the preliminary report on the investigation into the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash near Aktau in Kazakhstan was published. The document does not contain any conclusions about the causes of the crash but points out that the initial inspection of the wreckage revealed perforating holes, while damage and small foreign metallic objects were found inside the plane. Photographs to this effect were attached to the report. However, as the document noted, they had been sent for forensic tests "in order to determine the nature and origin of the puncture damage caused by foreign objects." Additionally, the report cites exchanges between pilots and air traffic controllers.
