MOSCOW: A telephone conversation between Russian and US foreign ministers, Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio, has been at Washington's initiative.
"A telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of the two countries was held at the initiative of the American side," the Russian Foreign Ministry has told TASS.
They have agreed to establish a communication channel aimed at addressing the longstanding issues in US-Russian relations.
"In the wake of the telephone conversation between the presidents of Russia and the United States on February 12, the foreign ministers agreed to maintain a communication channel to tackle the accumulated challenges in Russian-American relations. This initiative seeks to eliminate the unilateral barriers inherited from the previous administration, paving the way for mutually beneficial trade, economic, and investment cooperation," the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
"They agreed on regular contacts, including those for preparations for a Russian-American summit meeting," the ministry said.
"Lavrov and Rubio confirmed their readiness to work together to restore mutually respectful interstate dialogue in accordance with the tone set by the presidents," the ministry said.
"Mutual determination to interact on major international issues, including the settlement around Ukraine, the situation around Palestine and in general in the Middle East and in other regional tracks was outlined," the Foreign Ministry said.
"The two sides exchanged views on ways of putting an early end to the policy started by the administration of [former U.S. President] Barack Obama in 2016 on the maximum tightening of conditions for the operation of Russian diplomatic missions in the United States, which, of course, entailed retaliatory measures. It has been agreed to organize a meeting of experts in the near future to agree on concrete steps to mutually remove obstacles to the work of Russian and US foreign missions," the Foreign Ministry said.
