MOSCOW: Special Operations Forces perform unique tasks to protect citizens, they significantly increase the combat capability of the Russian army, President Vladimir Putin said in his congratulations to the Special Operations Forces on their professional holiday.
"Comrades, I congratulate you on Special Operations Forces’ Day.
The unification of mobile special forces units equipped with the most up-to-date weapons and equipment under a single command has been a significant milestone in the development of the Russian Army. It has greatly enhanced the combat capability of the Armed Forces and enabled the execution of critical, often unique, missions in the interests of our country - protecting our citizens and Russia’s sovereignty," he said in a video address.
He thanked the personnel and veterans of the Special Operations’ Forces for their "professionalism and dedication," "unwavering commitment to military duty," and "carrying out the most challenging combat missions."
The head of state noted that the Russian people take great pride in the Special Operations Forces and their achievements.
"I am confident that you will continue to move forward, refining your skills and securing new victories while steadfastly defending our citizens and the national interests of the Fatherland. I wish you good health and continued success in your service. My best wishes to all your loved ones. Happy holiday!" Putin added.
The Special Operations Forces (SOF) of the Russian Armed Forces are a highly mobile formation of the Russian Defense Ministry, which is in constant readiness for immediate use on any territory. The formation of the SOF as an independent grouping of the Russian Armed Forces began to take shape in late 2008 during a large-scale military reform launched by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov. The creation of the SOF was first publicly announced in November 2010 by Deputy Commander of the Airborne Forces Major General Alexander Lentsov.
Special Operations Forces Day was established by the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 26, 2015 and was included in the list of professional holidays and memorable days of the Russian Armed Forces.
