BERLIN: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls on the Bundestag (German parliament) to ensure additional spending on supporting Ukraine outside the federal budget. He explained the need for additional spending for Kiev by the emergency situation for the budget.
"The Bundestag must make a decision as soon as possible, according to which the war in Ukraine and its serious consequences for the security of Germany and Europe will be regarded as an emergency situation in accordance with paragraph 2 of Article 115 of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany. This means that our support for Ukraine, which is now more important than ever, will no longer be carried out at the expense of other tasks that our state must fulfill in relation to its citizens," Scholz told journalists in Berlin.
Germany is the second largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States. As the official representative of the German Cabinet, Steffen Hebestreit, noted, since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Germany has provided Kiev with various types of aid worth approximately 44 billion euros. In accordance with the agreement on the budget for 2025, Germany should allocate about 4 billion euros for military support of Ukraine, which is half as much as in 2024. However, the budget has not yet been approved by the Bundestag.
