MOSCOW: Four militants plotting a terrorist attack on a law enforcement facility in the city of Kaspiysk were neutralized during a counter-terrorism operation in Makhachkala, the capital of the Republic of Dagestan in Russia’s North Caucasus, the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) reported.

Militants’ neutralization
- When traffic policemen attempted to apprehend the militants, they opened fire on the officers.
- They were surrounded on the outskirts of the settlement of Semender by law enforcement officers who rushed to the scene.
- The head of the Russian Federal Security Service’s (FSB) directorate for Dagestan launched an operation against the militants and introduced a counter-terrorism operation regime in Makhachkala’s Kirovsky district.
- As a result of the counter-terrorism operation conducted by the NAC in the Republic of Dagestan, four gunmen who were plotting a terrorist act in a regional police department in Kaspiysk were eliminated.
- According to reports, the operations of the gang were coordinated by members of the Islamic State (banned in Russia) terrorist organization.
- At the site of the fighting and in a cache nearby, law enforcement officers found grenade launchers, improvised explosive devices, grenades, assault rifles, a pistol, as well as ammunition for them.
- The counter-terrorism operation regime was lifted at 6:20 a.m. Moscow time (3:20 a.m. GMT).
Statement by regional head
- Dagestan’s head Sergey Melikov described the eliminated militants’ actions as an attempt to destabilize the situation in the region.
- According to him, the criminals’ motives are yet to be uncovered.
- After the lifting of the counter-terrorism regime, the situation in Dagestan remains calm.
