WASHINGTON: The House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the US Congress, on Tuesday approved a bill to continue funding the work of the federal government until the end of the US fiscal year, which ends on September 30.
The Senate, the upper chamber of the US Congress, must now vote on the bill, after which it will go to US President Donald Trump, who has already supported it, for signing. The document includes provisions to increase defense spending by about $6 billion and cut funding for non-defense government programs by about $13 billion.
In the Senate, the document must pass the 60-vote threshold, for which Republicans will need the support of at least eight Democrats. Congress has until the end of Friday to approve it. If the document is not approved by 11:59 p.m. on March 14 (3:59 a.m. GMT on March 15), there will be a shutdown: a number of government agencies and programs will be suspended, the payment of salaries to hundreds of thousands of civil servants will be temporarily stopped, many of them will be sent on unpaid leave.
